When the around-the-clock days of darkness fall upon Anchorage Alaska, most people tuck themselves into the safety and warmth of their homes to avoid the long winter nights.
For a night photographer, the dark and cold provide a perfect, undisturbed canvas that we paint with colored flashlights. By the light of the moon and stars, we are out taking pictures of the abandoned and forgotten vehicles, buildings, and airplanes; bringing those dead objects back to life.
When most people think of Alaska they picture wildlife, ice, and northern lights; it never really crosses their mind that there is more Alaska that is not normally seen. With the high cost of shipping and the lack of recycling centers and landfills, abandoned vehicles litter the back roads and backyards, just waiting to be photographed.
Using nothing more than a few small flashlights, off camera flash units, and colored theatrical gels, we light up the subject in brilliant blues, greens, and reds. All of the lighting you see in the pictures is done while the shutter is open, not during post processing.
Since these images are created over a 2-10 minute time period, we are able to walk through the shot and light up the areas that we want to "glow" with color.
